Wegmans to Close Buffalo-area Galleria Store

The store's 229 employees will be offered transfers to other local Wegmans, the company said. The 16-year-old location is known as the Galleria store because of its proximity to the Galleria Mall across the street. The grocer's Dick Road store is less than two miles from the Galleria closing unit, and there are three other Wegmans units within a 10-mile radius.

"Our Galleria store was the exception to our norm of being situated in a densely populated residential area," noted Wegmans Buffalo division s.v.p. Mike Keating. "As we have watched every one of our other area stores experience significant sales increases in recent years, our Galleria store's sales growth has remained flat. This was in spite of an investment of over a half-million dollars into improvements in the store in the last several years."

Added Keating: "Strong companies make good business decisions and listen to their customers. Our customers are telling us that our other nearby locations better meet their needs, and we have listened."

Wegmans currently operates 71 stores, 11 of which are in the Buffalo area where the company employs about 4,500 associates.
