Walmart Enters Furnishings Youth ‘Zone,’ Wegmans Honored at Housewares Shows

Walmart this week rolled out Your Zone, a home furnishings line for teenagers that’s being sold nationwide and on Walmart.com.

"Your Zone provides a platform for teens to create their own space and express their evolving personality, for less," said Linda Hefner, EVP of Home at Bentonville, Ark.-based Walmart. "The Your Zone collection further strengthens our branded product offering. Teens love the fun products, and moms love the unbeatable prices."

Among the line’s items are comforter sets for $28 to $40, sheet sets for $12 to $24 and window treatments for under $15, along with mix-and-match rugs, pillows and throws; bulletin boards; display shelves; and other accessories. Furniture and lounge seating will hit stores in late spring.

Walmart's Home proprietary brand portfolio already includes Better Homes and Gardens, Canopy and MainStays.

In other housewares news, the International Housewares Association honored Wegmans Food Markets, Inc. with a 2009 Global Innovator Award (GIA) this month in Chicago. Heather Pawlowski, Wegmans’ VP of general merchandise, accepted the award.

Wegmans won for the U.S. market in the category of multi-store retailers. Previous U.S. honorees include Bloomingdale’s, Crate & Barrel, Target, and The Container Store.

“Anticipating customer needs and being on target takes collaboration across our entire company,” said Wegmans president Colleen Wegman.

Retailers from more over 20 countries were recognized at the event, which took place during the 2009 International Home and Housewares Show

“Wegmans is being recognized as a housewares innovator, not only in the supermarket channel, but across all housewares retailing channels,” noted Paul Giannetti, VP and editor-in-chief of HomeWorld Business magazine, which recently presented the grocer with a 2009 Housewares Design Award in the kitchenware category. “The company’s inviting, upscale merchandising and store design initiatives have made Wegmans a top-of-mind destination for housewares in its markets and a truly worthy honoree.”

Rochester, N.Y.-based Wegmans operates 72 stores in New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Virginia and Maryland.
