Walmart Banner to Have ‘Multiple’ Huntsville, Ala., Sites

Wal-Mart Stores Inc. will build its first Neighborhood Market in Huntsville, Ala., at the corner of Jordan Lane and Oakwood Avenue, with more to follow, according to a published report. Shane Davis, the city’s director of urban development, said local residents can expect “multiple” stores under the grocery-oriented banner, which launched in 1998.

“They’ve not selected [the other sites], but we’re happy that they’re committed to our city,” Davis told The Huntsville Times. “They want quality locations, and they’re going to be diligent about where they place them.”

There are currently about 200 Neighborhood Market locations across the United States, but Walmart said late last year that it wants to ramp up the present rollout rate of 100 new stores annually.

Walmart Real Estate Business Trust bought the Oakwood Avenue site, which includes a TitleMax office, for $1.78 million early last month. Davis said he believed that the Bentonville, Ark.-based mega-retailer would wait until TitleMax’s lease lapsed before starting construction.
