Walgreens to Stay Open on Christmas

DEERFIELD, Ill. -- Leading drugstore chain Walgreens here said yesterday its stores would be open Christmas Eve and Christmas Day to help last-minute holiday shoppers and anyone with health care product needs.

More than 1,500 Walgreens stores and pharmacies will be open 24 hours throughout the holiday weekend serving 11th-hour shoppers and taking care of the thousands of people who will have medical needs, the retailer said.

Non-24-hour Walgreens stores will be open normal hours Christmas Eve and from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Christmas Day. Pharmacies in non-24-hour stores will have reduced hours Christmas Eve and will be closed Christmas Day, except at select locations.

To serve last-minute holiday shoppers, Walgreens will sell many gifts under $10, such as plush animals and toys, candles, boxed chocolates, books, videos, and DVDs.

Walgreens also sells its own gift cards, as well as gift cards for other popular destinations including Starbucks, Applebee's, Tower Records, AMC Theatres, Toys 'R' Us, Borders, Pizza Hut, Red Lobster, Shell, iTunes, and Best Western Hotels in amounts from $10 to $100. Additionally the retailer carries pre-paid phone cards, pre-paid cellular phones, and pre-paid cellular phone cards including Virgin, Tracfone, T-Mobile and Cingular, available in amounts from $10 to $50.

And for last-minute food shoppers, Walgreens carries milk, bread, eggs, ice, soda, chips, and desserts.
