Wal-Mart's August Sales Boosted by Food, B-t-S Buys
BENTONVILLE, Ark. - Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. said yesterday that August same-store sales were up 2.7 percent, driven by back-to-school purchases. The retailer also predicted that same-store sales would increase by 1 percent to 3 percent next month.
Total sales for the month reached $25.97 billion, up 12.5 percent from last year, said Wal-Mart. Of that, Wal-Mart stores contributed $16.98 billion, an 8.1 percent increase from last year.
Sam's Club's stores, meanwhile, saw sales rise 4.2 percent to $3.13 billion.
"We saw sales momentum for the August period build throughout the month," c.f.o. Tom Schoewe said in a statement. "Our customers focused spending on food, consumables, and items for back to school."
At Wal-Mart stores, same-store sales increased 2.5 percent. Same-store sales at Sam's Club stores were up 3.4 percent.
