Wal-Mart, Target See Higher October Sales, Despite Sluggish Halloween Results
BENTONVILLE, Ark. - Both Wal-Mart Stores Inc. and Target Corp. on Thursday reported higher sales for October, despite sluggish results from Halloween due in part to the Washington sniper attacks.
At Wal-Mart, net sales were $18.497 billion, up 11.3 percent from the year-ago period. Sales at stores open at least one year rose 3.7 percent, within the range of its modest target. The Wal-Mart division's sales for were $11.770 billion, up 12.7 percent. Sam's Club sales were $2.404 billion, an increase of 4.5 percent from the year-ago period.
Minneapolis-based Target Corp. said same-store sales rose 1.5 percent, and total sales rose 9.8 percent to $3.15 billion from $2.87 billion a year earlier.
Target's sales were bolstered by a 2.1 percent increase in same-store sales at its 1, 148 Target stores. Target stores' total sales increased 11.6 percent to $2.61 billion.
According to Target's prerecorded monthly sales update, the Target stores had a strong showing from pharmacy, entertainment, children's apparel and shoes. Men's apparel, sporting goods, stationary and holiday were all soft.
