Wal-Mart to Open 20 New Walk-in Clinics in Southeast Stores
BENTONVILLE, Ark. -- Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. plans to open new walk-in health clinics in 20 of its Southeastern stores by the end of 2006, in a deal with New York-based CheckUps.
"Wal-Mart serves as a community hub for thousands of people who can benefit from more convenient, affordable access to quality healthcare," said Amee Chande, v.p. of health care strategy and communications for Wal-Mart. "We are pleased to invite CheckUps into more of our stores to meet the basic and preventive health needs of these communities and Wal-Mart customers."
Wal-Mart sources were unavailable yesterday to confirm how many of the clinics will go into supercenters versus conventional discount stores.
Check-Ups, formerly known as Quick Quality Care, said it will set up clinics that feature state-of-the-art technology, private exam rooms, and diagnostic equipment, staffed by certified nurse practitioners who work collaboratively with local physicians to address medical conditions from pediatrics to geriatrics.
Of the 20 new clinics, five will be go in Wal-Mart stores in the New Orleans, La. area; six in the Jackson, Miss. area; and nine in Alabama, near Huntsville, Birmingham, and Mobile. CheckUps already operates three clinics in Wal-Mart stores in Cape Coral, Tampa, and Stuart, Fla.
Check-Ups clinics diagnose and treat common ailments such as strep throat, ear and sinus infections, and provide routine pediatric care, blood screenings, and immunizations, along with services such as healthy living counseling. Its nurse practitioners can write and email prescriptions to the patient's preferred pharmacy. Visits typically take under 15 minutes and no appointments are necessary, according to CheckUps.
