Wal-Mart Now Canada's Biggest Commercial Buyer of Green Power
MISSISSAUGA, Ont. -- Wal-Mart Canada Corp.'s three-year agreement to buy 31,000 megawatt hours of clean, renewable power from Bullfrog Power to green the electricity of three of its Alberta stores, together with continuing alternative-energy contracts in Ontario and British Columbia, makes the company the nation's largest commercial purchaser of green power.
This year the retailer will operate the equivalent of 15 stores emissions free, via the purchase of green power from solar, wind, and low-impact hydro sources, contributing to Wal-Mart Canada's aim to lower its carbon emissions footprint by at least 19,000 tons in 2007.
"Our company has an ambitious goal to one day operate with 100 percent renewable energy," said Wal-Mart Canada president and c.e.o. Mario Pilozzi in a statement. "In the short term, we are focused on making immediate change through choices like dimming our summer lighting and buying green power. In the long run, we hope to play a role in fostering sustainable resources and making alternative energy more mainstream."
The company's combined green power purchases are equivalent to taking about 3,875 cars off the road for a year.
Wal-Mart Canada operates 277 discount stores, seven Wal-Mart Supercentres, and six Sam's Club membership warehouse operations.
