Wal-Mart Launches Diabetes Awareness Event

BENTONVILLE, Ark. -- Wal-Mart will launch a Diabetes Awareness customer educational event this weekend in more than 2,900 stores across the country to help the more than 17 million Americans with diabetes.

The event, which will take place on Saturday, Sept. 6, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., will be hosted in conjunction with suppliers Abbott's Ross Products Division and Novartis.

Customers will be able to sample a variety of free products relevant to diabetics, such as the new Glucerna Weight Loss Shakes, the first weight-loss shakes specifically designed for people with diabetes to use in a reduced-calorie program.

Additionally, with millions of Americans unaware they have the disease, Wal-Mart will also be providing free blood glucose screenings performed by certified health screeners throughout the day. Blood glucose screenings can range in cost from $15 to $30.

Customers will also be able to complete a self-assessment diabetes risk test and will be provided with an exclusive, diabetes resource book and Diabetes Digest magazine to learn about early detection, risk factors, and tips for nutrition, as well as other diabetes-related resources.

"We have a unique opportunity to communicate the seriousness of this disease to the millions of customers who visit our stores every week," says Frank Segrave, v.p., pharmacy division, for Wal-Mart. The event, he adds, is designed to raise awareness and promote a better, healthier way of life for people with diabetes and their friends and families.

The event comes in conjunction with the official kickoff of Diabetes Awareness month in all Wal-Mart stores across the country on Sept. 2. Throughout the month, customers will have access to in-store activities with certified health screeners, information, resources, and health tips for those living with the disease as well as for those who may be at risk.
