Wal-Mart Driving into Metro Detroit with 5 Supercenters in'07

DETROIT -- Wal-Mart Stores Inc. will open five supercenters in the metro Detroit market here next summer, with another three potentially on tap for 2008.

The world's largest retailer - which plans to open more than 600 new locations around the world by 2008 - said it will open supercenters in the suburban Detroit communities of Livonia, Rochester Hills, Commerce Township, Sterling Heights and South Lyon next summer. The locations will be the first Supercenters Wal-Mart will open in the slow-growth metro Detroit market, which is currently dominated in the grocery sector by Michigan-based Meijer Inc., Kroger, and Farmer Jack, all of which are unionized, while Wal-Mart is not.

Wal-Mart, which is also considering opening three additional supercenters in Alma, Dearborn and Taylor in 2008, currently has about 100 stores in Michigan, including 38 supercenters; and employs more than 30,000 workers in the state.
