Vons Donates $20,000 to Homeless Organization
LOS ANGELES -- The Vons Foundation plans to donate $20,000 to The Midnight Mission, a social service organizations in the Los Angeles region to support ongoing programs including meal services, emergency shelter, drug and alcohol recovery services, job training, and other programs serving thousands of homeless individuals and families.
"Operating in Southern California for the past 100 years, Vons takes pride in being an active member of the communities in which we serve," said Sandra Calderon, president of the Vons Foundation, which is operated by Vons, a division of Pleasanton, Calif.-based supermarket chain Safeway, Inc. "This Thanksgiving, we are proud to support The Midnight Mission, which touches the lives of so many people in Los Angeles."
The Midnight Mission provides a variety of programs ranging from meals, to showers and haircuts, to shelter and lodging, to doctor and dental visits. The organization aims to meet the immediate needs of the homeless and remove the obstacles to self-sufficiency through counseling, education, job training, and placement services. It also provides transitional housing for homeless families in its Family Housing Complex. In 2006, the organization expects to provide nearly 1 million meals to individuals through all its programs.
"With this donation, the Vons Foundation is reaching out to some of the most vulnerable members of our community this holiday season," said Jan Perry, Los Angeles councilwoman, District 9. "I commend Vons for supporting The Midnight Mission, which provides a safe haven and a path to self sufficiency for so many Angelenos."
The Vons Foundation provides ongoing support for a variety of health and human services such as women's shelters, health screening, child care and other services. It provides donations to charities offering services within the Vons operating area.
The Vons division of Safeway operates 309 stores throughout California and Clark County Nevada under the Vons and Pavilions banners. Safeway operates 1,767 stores in the United States and Canada and had annual sales of $38.4 billion in 2005.
