Vons Announces Support of LAPD Stop the Violence Initiative

Vons, a division of Safeway Inc., today announced a new initiative in support of the Los Angeles Police Department's Stop the Violence campaign.

Tom Keller, President of the Vons Division, made the announcement at a news conference with LAPD Chief of Police Bernard Parks at a Vons supermarket in the Hollenbeck community of Los Angeles.

"Vons agrees with Chief Parks that putting an end to violence requires the active endorsement and support of all members of the community," Keller said. "That's why we are pleased to step forward as the first major retailer to endorse the Chief's initiative and help get this important message out to all our customers."

The Vons initiative runs throughout August and September and includes the following components:

-- Distribution of approximately 40,000 paper grocery bags imprinted with Stop the Violence information to all 326 Vons stores in southern California and Nevada

-- Distribution of bilingual Stop the Violence informational flyers at all Vons stores located within the City of Los Angeles

-- Broadcast of an in-store message by Chief Parks in all LA City stores

-- Display of Stop the Violence posters in all LA City stores

-- A donation of $10,000 to LAPD juvenile programs by the Vons Foundation.

Chief Parks launched the Stop the Violence in response to the growing rate of youth violence in the city. The initiative encompasses all LAPD youth violence prevention programs designed to reduce the number of young people involved with violent crimes, assist young people with the development of strong moral character, and teach young people to have a high regard for human life.
