Village Super Market, Inc. to Acquire Former N.J. Stop & Shop Location
SPRINGFIELD, N.J. -- ShopRite operator Village Super Market, Inc. said yesterday that it expects to acquire the store fixtures, lease, and other assets of a soon-to-be former Stop & Shop in Absecon, N.J.
According to Village Super Market, the acquisition is contingent on the completion of Elizabeth, N.J.-based Wakefern Food Corp.'s purchase of nine underperforming Stop & Shop stores in southern New Jersey, including the Abescon store.
The pending sale of the New Jersey stores to Wakefern, along with an additional Stop & Shop store in Middletown, N.Y., was announced last week. The stores are scheduled to close in early August, at which time they will be sold to the cooperative of ShopRite operators.
No date has been set yet for the re-opening of the Abescon store under the ShopRite banner.
Village Super Market operates 23 ShopRite supermarkets in New Jersey and eastern Pennsylvania.
