Vidalia Onions Hosts National Recipe Contest

VIDALIA, Ga. -- Beginning May 1, consumers across the United States and Canada can put their culinary skills to the test by entering the first-ever national recipe contest sponsored by the Vidalia Onion Committee based here.

Hosted by celebrity chef and television personality Jon Ashton, the Very Vidalia Recipe Contest is a summertime-themed promotion encouraging Vidalia onion lovers to submit their favorite original recipe featuring Vidalia onions.

"We have so many fans who call and e-mail us to explain their favorite ways to prepare Vidalias," said Wendy Brannen, executive director, Vidalia Onion Committee. "This recipe contest is a wonderful way for them to be able to share their secrets -- and maybe even win a great prize."

Vidalia onions, grown only in Georgia, are available to consumers from late April through September offering tangible inspiration for contest participants. Chef Ashton is promoting the contest to U.S. and Canadian consumers through in-store appearances and point-of-sale materials. Ashton created three Vidalia onion recipes perfect for summertime grilling gatherings, which are on the Committee's Web site.

"Delicious rings of love come to my mind when I hear the word Vidalia," said Ashton. "I love cooking with Vidalia onions because they are absolutely delicious, sweet and juicy."

Consumers can enter the Very Vidalia Recipe Contest by submitting their original Vidalia onion recipe and official entry form on http://www.VidaliaOnion.org before August 17, 2007. Consumers can also mail their entry directly to the Vidalia Onion Committee.

The Very Vidalia Recipe Contest winners will be announced on September 13. The grand prize winner will choose either a family vacation to Orlando, Fla. and intimate dinner with Ashton, or have Ashton fly to his or her hometown and cook dinner for up to eight people. The second place winner will win $500 while the third place winner will receive $250.
