US Senator Proposes Bill to Protect Food Companies from Obesity Lawsuits

WASHINGTON - A Kentucky senator has introduced a bill to protect food makers and sellers from lawsuits seeking to hold them liable for an obesity crisis in the United States.

The proposed "Commonsense Consumption Act," sponsored by Kentucky Republican Senator Mitch McConnell, would prohibit lawsuits in which plaintiffs say food companies and restaurants have made them overweight or obese.

McConnell said he had yet to round up co-sponsors and no timetable had been set to bring the measure to a vote.

"There remains a lot of resistance here in the Senate against legal reform," he told reporters. "But this narrow area might have a chance because people across the board think this kind of litigation is utterly absurd."
