United Egg Producers Bows Web Site on Hen Care Guidelines
ATLANTA -- As consumers become more concerned about the well-being of laying hens, the United Egg Producers (UEP) here wants to teach them how animal welfare fits into UEP's certification program.
The trade organization of U.S. egg producers said it has unveiled a new Web site, www.uepcertified.com, to provide consumers with information on UEP Certified eggs and the extensive science behind their program.
“This online resource is part of our effort to educate retailers and consumers about the egg industry and the UEP Certified animal welfare program," said Gene Gregory, president, UEP.
The new Web site features pictures of hens in cage production systems as well as a wealth of science-based information, including the UEP Certified guidelines, advantages of cage and non-cage production systems, links to UEP Certified member farms and much more. It also showcases farmer profiles, giving consumers an opportunity to learn more about the family farms from which their eggs originate.
UEP developed the “United Egg Producers Certified” program for cage egg production out of guidelines established by an independent advisory committee of some of the top animal welfare scientific experts in the U.S.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture, the Food and Drug Administration and the Federal Trade Commission have approved the UEP Certified logo and the International Egg Commission has recognized the program as a model from which to create animal welfare programs in other member countries throughout the world. In addition, the Food Marketing Institute and the National Council of Chain Restaurants also endorsed these guidelines.
