Union Members to Protest Wal-Mart Today
November 21, 2002 - MINNESOTA -- Grocery workers here and nationwide will take part in a "National Day of Action" today to draw attention to the nonunion stance of Wal-Mart Stores Inc.
The United Food and Commercial Workers Union has organized more than 100 events to highlight what members see as disparities in wages, benefits and working conditions.
Members of Plymouth-based Local 653 will conduct informational picketing at the Wal-Mart and Sam's Club in Maple Grove. The local expects 60 to 80 members, with support from other unions, said President Ron Zwieg.
Local 789 in South St. Paul will send more than 100 members to Wal-Marts in Oak Park Heights, Vadnais Heights, Hastings and Blaine. They will buy small items such as toothbrushes and soap and will point out their union's Web site to cashiers while checking out.
