Unilever Home and Personal Care to Close Chicago Distribution Center
CHICAGO - Unilever Home and Personal Care (HPC) announced on Tuesday that it would close its Chicago distribution center during the fourth quarter of 2003.
The center, opened in 1989 as part of the Helene Curtis company, currently employs 144 workers. Unilever acquired Helene Curtis in 1996. The closure is part of the company's redesigned supply chain, which includes a regionalized distribution network able to provide one-day service to the vast majority of Unilever HPC customers.
Commenting on the closure, John Rothenberg, senior vice president, supply chain for Unilever HPC said, "The decision to close the Chicago distribution center was made following a long and careful evaluation of our existing capacities balanced with future needs. We are currently redesigning our warehouse operations to simplify our distribution network, enhance customer service, decrease distribution costs and support Unilever efforts across the business to build a world class supply chain."
Unilever operates in 88 countries around the globe and employs approximately 300,000 people. In the United States, Unilever employs some 28,000 people and has 80 offices and manufacturing sites in 26 states.
