Undeclared Almonds Prompt Albertsons Chocolate Ice Cream Recall

BOISE, Idaho -- Albertsons, Inc. yesterday pulled some brand chocolate ice cream from shelves because the product may contain undeclared almonds.

The ice cream was manufactured at Dean Foods Company of California's Buena Park ice cream plant, and was distributed to Albertsons stores in Southern California.

Only 1.75 quart containers of Albertsons "Chocolate" ice cream with a "Rocky Road" ice cream lid containing a "best by date" of August 31, 2007 are involved in the recall.

"Rocky Road" ice cream contains almonds, while the "Chocolate" variety does not. The 1.75-quart containers had lids that identified the product correctly as "Rocky Road" ice cream; but containers that identified the product incorrectly as "Chocolate" ice cream, and thus did not mention almonds as an ingredient.

No other products were involved in the voluntary recall. Though no illnesses or allergic reactions had been reported, individuals with allergies to almonds run the risk of a serious reaction if they consume this product, said Dean Foods.

Approximately 180 units of the affected product might have been produced, Dean Foods said. Some of the product has already been recovered, and stores have been instructed to remove any of the affected ice cream from store shelves, said supplier said.
