Tops Markets Units Purchased by C&S to Become Grand Unions, Again
KEENE, N.H. -- C&S Wholesale Grocers, based here, said last week that it would convert the 12 upstate New York Tops Markets it bought to the Grand Union banner -- the same trade name the stores operated under when they were bought by Tops five years previously, according to published reports.
The Adirondack region stores, which C&S will begin operating in mid-February 2006, consist of one each in Hamilton, Elizabethtown, Bolton Landing, Ausable Forks, Schroon Lake, Peru, North Creek, Corinth, Warrensburg, and Chestertown, and two in Saranac Lake. C&S acquired Grand Union Family Markets in 2001 when the grocer went bankrupt.
Clifton Park, N.Y.-based Grand Union currently operates 24 supermarkets in Connecticut, New York, Pennsylvania, and Vermont.
C&S, the second-biggest grocery wholesaler in the United States, counts major chains, mass marketers, wholesale clubs, and large independents among its customers.
