Topps Meat Said Found in Some N.J. Stores Post-recall
ELIZABETH, N.J. -- One hundred and thirty-eight boxes of potentially contaminated frozen hamburger and beef products, which were recalled more than a month ago by Topps Meat Co. here before it closed its doors, have reportedly been discovered in seven small grocery stores in New Jersey's Hudson County.
State Attorney General Anne Milgram and acting consumer affairs director Larry DeMarzo told weekly business journal NJBiz that investigators from the state Division of Consumers Affairs and from the Hudson County and municipal health departments have visited 197 groceries since last week, when recalled Topps products were found in a Union City store.
The company issued a historically large recall of 21.7 million pounds of ground beef products following outbreaks of E. coli infection in several states. The USDA later determined that the source of the contamination was likely beef trim from Ranchers Beef, Ltd. in Canada.
The products were found in Union City's Bargain World; West New York's Lucky Food Center; Jersey City's Wayne Gusto Meat Market, Super Good Luck Grocery, 8 New Brothers Super World, and La Mia Grocery; and North Bergen's BergenLine Supermarket.
