Texas College Honors Brookshire Grocery Co. with Legacy Award

Texas College presented Brookshire Grocery Co. with the Tyler, Texas-based College’s Legacy Award during its third annual Legacy Dinner held Wednesday, March 9.

Each year Texas College recognizes an organization or individual who has contributed to the school and community. Dr. Dwight Fennell, Texas College president, said the scholarship fundraiser dinner provides an opportunity for the college to celebrate service and bring the community together.

Brad Brookshire, the grocer’s chairman of the board, accepted the Legacy Award from Dr. Fennell on behalf of BGC. He said the college and BGC have much in common with both starting out modestly — Brookshire’s in a single 25-by-100-foot store and the college in a one-room schoolhouse. “Both entities value integrity and perseverance and have a deep commitment to the community,” he said. “It’s humbling to be recognized by an institution that promotes strong values and Christian beliefs.”

Texas College is a historically African-American college that has provided a liberal arts education for students since 1894.
