Tesco Takes on Microsoft with Private Label Office Productivity Software

LONDON, United Kingdom -- As if it wasn't enough that Google just entered the productivity software business, Tesco is also going head on with Microsoft with its launch this week of store-branded computer software featuring word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, and database functionality - all compatible with related Microsoft products.

In addition to the office suite, the software line includes two security/antivirus products, a personal finance application, a CD/DVD burning tool, and a photo-editing feature. Each title sells for under £20, or just over $38 U.S. In contrast, the new Microsoft Office Standard 2007 suite, its second lowest priced version of the suite, sells for $399.

Tesco began selling the software earlier in the year on its Web site, and plans to have the products available chain-wide by the end of 2007.
