Teamsters Vote to Approve New 30-Month Agreement with Dominick's
CHICAGO -- More than 500 drivers, warehouse, and distribution workers overwhelmingly approved a new agreement with Dominick's, a subsidiary of Safeway Inc., the union said yesterday.
The workers are members of Teamsters Local 703 in Chicago, and provide the warehousing and delivery of the majority of food and general merchandise items to the 111 Dominick's stores in the area.
Each unit voted individually, the union said. Negotiations began in March 2004 with negotiators meeting more than 30 times.
"This contract is a testament to our members at Dominick's," said Tom Stiede, Local 703's secretary-treasurer. "The grocery industry is in flux, and our bargaining committee remained strong, united and focused on achieving our goal to obtain the best grocery contract in the nation, while providing the company with a higher level of productivity."
The approved contract includes: a wage and benefit package increase of $3.05 over 30 months; full retroactivity back to April 1, 2004; maintenance of health benefits, pension and severance plans; a pension plan for the workers at the repack facility; job protections including a prohibition on third party contractors.
