Target Targets Kmart Distribution Center

MINNEAPOLIS -- Target Corp. here plans on buying a 1.4 million square-foot distribution center in Montgomery County in upstate New York from bankrupt rival discounter Kmart Corp., pending bankruptcy court approval.

According to the New York Governor's office, the distribution center would open in June 2005 and employ 650 workers. Target already operates a distribution center in nearby Wilton, N.Y., that opened in 2000, and would continue in operation.

Target has been expanding in the region, acquiring 35 former Montgomery Ward stores and three Bradlees stores in the last few years.
