Target Plans Staten Island, N.Y., Store

Target Corp. has revealed plans to open a new store in Staten Island, N.Y., in July 2013. The approximately 150,000-square-foot store will be located at the Richmond Shopping Center in the New York City borough. To date, Target has unveiled plans to open eight Target stores in 2013, among them CityTargets in Los Angeles and Portland, Ore., as well as its first locations in Canada.

In addition to everyday essentials and exclusive brands, the Staten Island Central Target will carry a selection of fresh produce, fresh packaged meat and pre-packaged baked goods.

To fill the approximately 300 positions the new store will require, Target will host job fairs about two months before the location opens. At the fairs, prospective candidates may apply and interview for open positions. Candidates can also apply online or at in-store kiosks in all Target stores about three months prior to the opening.

“New York continues to be a strong market for Target,” said Samir Shah, SVP of stores in the Eastern region for the Minneapolis-based retailer, which operates 1,781 stores across the United States. “Target is committed to being a good neighbor and developing long-lasting relationships with guests and the New York community.”

The new store will be the company’s second on Staten Island; it already operates a location featuring fresh grocery items on 2900 Veterans Road West. Other New York City locations are in the boroughs of Manhattan, Brooklyn, the Bronx and Queens.

In keeping with Target’s philosophy of community outreach, the store will start a local grant program, contribute to the United Way and donate food to a Feeding America member, or approved agency. Target also encourages team members to volunteer their time to help others.
