Target Opens 60 New Stores, Including Super Targets

MINNEAPOLIS -- Upscale discounter Target Corp. here celebrated its greatest amount of grand openings ever this weekend, with 60 new Target stores cropping up literally from coast to coast.

The company did not specify if the new stores would be conventional Targets or its larger Super Targets, which are combo supermarketmass merchandise formats. However, several local reports hinted that certain cities would be getting Super Targets.

The cities that are getting new Target units include fast-growing Yuma, Ariz.; Buena Park, San Jose, Riverbank, Redondo Beach, and other locations in California; popular beach community Destin, Fla. and other Florida locations; Atlanta and other Georgia sites; Philadelphia and others in Pennsylvania; and even Baton Rouge, La.

Among the locations that got a Super Target is West St. Paul, Minn.

Other states on the list include Colorado, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, and Virginia.

Three additional stores in Ft. Myers, Fla., Sawgrass, Fla., and Vernon Hills, Ill. will open by the end of the month, Target said.

By the end of October, Target will be operating 1,400 stores in 47 states.
