Swifty Shutters More Stores Without Warning

MASON, Ohio -- Swifty Gas locations in parts of Ohio have closed their doors, leaving employees and customers to question the moves.

According to Cincinnati.com, a Swifty gas station in Mason has yellow tape blocking access, while employees at another station in Fairfield told the news outlet that the location is slated to close Sunday. An assistant manager at a Swifty Gas location in Miami Township also said company officials told workers that station will close by the end of June.

In addition, two locations in the Dayton area also closed suddenly within the past few weeks.

Seymour, Ind.-based Swifty Gas operates convenience stores and gas stations in Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky, Ohio and Tennessee. CSNews Online could not reach company executives for comment Wednesday afternoon.

William Johnson, a station manager for the Amelia Swifty station, told Cincinnati.com that the closures were due to the death of company founder Don W. Myers Sr. Myers passed away in July.

"This is a transitional period the company is going through in regards to the founder passing away," Johnson said, adding that he has not received notice that his location will close.

The Ohio closings are just the latest batch reported in the past few months. In September, at least five Swifty gas stations in Louisville, Ky., closed without warning. Signage was removed or painted over and fueling equipment was removed even as drivers pulled into the stations, as CSNews Online previously reported.

One Swifty location in Madison County in Indiana met a similar fate in January.
