Supervalu’s Acme Markets Axes Grocery Home Delivery

Following the lead of its sister Boise-based Albertsons unit, which revealed earlier this month that it was pulling the plug on its home grocery delivery business, Supervalu’s Philadelphia-based Acme Markets subsidiary is planning to do the same.

“After taking a hard look at current online industry trends and conducting careful analysis related to delivering the best value and customer experience, the company has decided to end the delivery portion of our online shopping experience and move to pickup service only,” Bart Bohlen, Acme SVP of operations, was quoted as saying in a local press report.

Instead of making home deliveries of online grocery orders, the 126-store supermarket chain intends to expand its pickup option for customers who place online orders, at 40 of Acme’s stores in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware.

The pickup service will start May 25 in New Jersey and Delaware and June 1 in Pennsylvania.
