Supervalu Ups McNiff to President of W. Newell Produce Div.

Supervalu has named a new leader to helm its W. Newell national produce distribution company.

Greg McNiff, 46, whose most recent position was VP of fresh merchandising for the Southern California division of Supervalu banner Albertsons, will begin his new duties as president of W. Newell on July 19. In his new role, McNiff will report to Janel Haugarth, Supervalu’s EVP and president/COO, supply chain services, and oversee the full scope of W. Newell’s operations in addition to focusing on Supervalu’s goal of delivering quality, freshness, value and service to all of its customers.

“Greg’s time overseeing the Albertsons Southern California division’s fresh departments along with his broad experience in marketing and merchandising make him an excellent fit to lead W. Newell’s operations,” said Haugarth. “We know that fresh local produce is important to our customers, and under Greg’s leadership, we will continue to provide quality, locally grown produce at competitive prices.”

During McNiff’s 29-year tenure with the company, he has served in several leadership roles in Southern California, Nevada and Idaho, including VP of marketing, VP of integration, area VP of operations and district manager.

As one of the largest companies in the U.S. grocery channel, with estimated annual sales of $39 billion, Minneapolis-based Supervalu serves customers across the country through a network of approximately 4,290 stores composed of around 1,160 traditional retail stores, including 840 in-store pharmacies; 1,190 hard-discount Save-A-Lot stores, of which 855 are operated by licensee owners; and 1,940 independent stores serviced primarily by the company’s traditional food distribution business.
