Supervalu Taps Cub Prez For New SVP Post

In tandem with a realigned leadership structure at retailer/distributor Supervalu announced last week by new CEO Craig Herkert, Brian Huff, president of the retailer/distributor’s Cub Foods division, was tapped to serve in the newly created position of SVP/specialty retail.

Effective immediately, Huff, who will report to Pete Van Helden, EVP/retail operations, has responsibility for Supervalu’s corporate retail banner groups, including Milford, Ohio-based bigg’s; his most recent alma mater, Stillwater, Minn.-based Cub Foods, Virginia Beach, Va.-based Farm Fresh; Fargo, N.D.-based Hornbacher’s; St. Louis, Mo.-based Shop ’n Save; and Lanham, Md.-based Shoppers Food & Pharmacy.

“As we realign our retail business to best serve our customers, I am privileged to have Brian take on increased leadership responsibilities within our team,” said Van Helden. “His extraordinary talent and leadership, combined with outstanding retail experience, strengthen our ability to exceed the needs of our shoppers and advance our growth.” Van Helden added that Huff’s appointment “further solidifies the important partnership between Supervalu retail, merchandising and marketing groups,” thereby strengthening “the critical relationship between these operations” to allow Supervalu to better anticipate and respond to the changing needs of consumers.

Huff, 50, joined Minneapolis-based Supervalu in 2003 as VP of merchandising for Cub Foods. In 2005, he was named president of Cub Foods, leading the division to continued improvement in operations and financial results. Prior to joining Supervalu, Huff was VP/merchandising at Sam’s Club. Having spent his entire career in retail grocery, Huff has also held positions at Price Chopper, Bruno’s and Metro Food Markets.
