Supervalu Taps Brand Marketing Expert as New EVP/CMO

Julie Dexter Berg, a seasoned brand marketing consultant, will join Supervalu on March 15 as its new EVP/CMO, where she will lead all of the company’s marketing activities that will include customer and brand strategy, advertising and research and analytics.

Reporting to Craig Herkert, CEO and president of the Minneapolis-based retailer and distributor, Dexter Berg, 52, has more than 20 years of executive management experience in marketing, product management and operations. She most recently served as managing partner of Bellevue, Wash.-based Brandmaking, LLC, a brand and customer strategy consulting firm that she founded in 2004. Prior to launching her own company, she served as EVP/CMO of Englewood, Colo.-based MediaOne, and before that, was EVP/GM for Airtouch Wireless (now Verizon). She also has nine years of experience in consumer packaged goods marketing and brand management with Carnation Company and Nestle Foods.

Commenting on the latest addition to Supervalu’s management team, Herkert lauded Dexter Berg’s “terrific blend of strong experience in both marketing and operations leadership,” that he expects will impart “a disciplined customer focus” for the multi-banner, 4,300-store company. “She has developed and implemented brand and customer management strategies for multiple companies that were effective in building customer loyalty and driving sales,” said Herkert.

Dexter Berg’s appointment will help close the gap in the wake of the departures of former Supervalu executives Duncan Mac Naughton, who had been EVP of merchandising and marketing, and Steve Michaelson, former CMO.
