Supervalu Settles Pay Dispute with Indiana Warehouse Workers

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Supervalu Holdings Inc. has agreed to pay about $760,000 to resolve a lawsuit brought by 10 women who worked at the company's general merchandise warehouse in Fort Wayne, Ind., before it closed in July 1999, The Associated Press reports. The company also has agreed to pay $400,000 to 22 women represented by the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission in a similar lawsuit.

The lawsuits alleged that Supervalu paid female employees 70 percent of the wages paid to men who worked alongside them at the warehouse, according to the AP.

The food distributor settled both cases out of court to avoid the expense of further litigation, a Supervalu spokeswoman told the press. The company denies violating any laws, including the Equal Pay Act.
