Supervalu to Reenter Atlanta Market with Discount Formats
ATLANTA - Two years after closing its Atlanta area Cub Foods, national wholesaler Supervalu is pushing into the metro Atlanta market again with discount formats, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.
The company plans to open 35 grocery stores in the hotly competitive market over the next five years. The stores will operate under the names Save-A-Lot and Deals, Nothing Over a Dollar.
"We think we can bring our value proposition to metro Atlanta," said Dan Kimack, spokesman for the company. "Extreme value merchandising in retail is one of the most dynamic industries."
At least nine area stores will open this year, the company said.
Supervalu operates 100 Deals, and the metro Atlanta locations are the first sites outside the Midwest.
There are three Save-A-Lot stores already in metro Atlanta, two run by licensed operators. Supervalu acquired nine Save-A-Lot stores in the Southeast at the same time it announced the 2001 closings of 17 Atlanta area Cub Foods, which it co-owned with Delhaize Group, parent of Food Lion.
