Supervalu Names Gilliam Head of Northern Region; Ups Chew to Southeast EVP

MINNEAPOLIS -- Supervalu has promoted two company veterans to new posts. Jim Gilliam has been named president of Supervalu’s Northern region, while Bill Chew was named e.v.p. of the distributor's Southeast region.

In his new post, Gilliam will oversee operations at six distribution centers comprising Supervalu’s Northern region operations, servicing grocery retailers in Iowa, Minnesota, eastern Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, and western Wisconsin. He will also be responsible for the company's Northwest marketing region, which serves the western United States and Alaska.

Gilliam succeeds Janel Haugarth, who was recently named president and c.o.o. of Supervalu's supply chain services. In his new capacity, Gilliam will report to Haugarth, who said, "Jim brings to the position a wealth of experience, and his bold management style will be a great asset to the region." Haugarth also cited Gilliam's "energetic leadership and the dedication of our employees in the Northern and Northwest regions."

Gilliam joined Supervalu in 1982 as division controller for the Ft. Wayne division. He has since held a number of positions of increasing responsibility, including v.p. of category management and v.p. of retail marketing for the Central region. He was promoted to e.v.p. of the Central region in 2000, and in 2004 assumed the post of e.v.p. of the Southeast region.

Bill Chew, Gilliam's successor, will be responsible for the Southeast region's retail marketing, market development, and merchandising functions. A 20-year Supervalu veteran, Chew was most recently v.p. of retail marketing for the Midwest region, and has held a variety of positions of increasing responsibility in category management, customer service, and retail development. Chew will report to Mark Anderson, Midwest region president.

"Bill brings a wealth of industry experience that will be an enormous asset to our Southeast region customers," said Anderson. "We believe that the momentum the Southeast region is experiencing will continue to grow under his very able leadership."

With annual revenues of approximately $20 billion, Supervalu supplies 1,555 retail grocery locations, including licensed Save-A-Lot locations. Its diverse supply chain network provides distribution and related logistics support services across the nation's grocery channel.
