Supervalu Launches National Hunger Relief Campaign
In honor of National Hunger Action Month, Supervalu and its nationwide family of stores are conducting a coordinated program of hunger relief efforts in communities across the country.
The activities, which include store-based fundraising, employee volunteer initiatives, and food donations, are being done in partnership with Feeding America (formerly known as America's Second Harvest), with all proceeds will be donated to food banks located in the communities served by Supervalu's stores.
Jeff Noddle, Supervalu chairman/c.e.o., said "National Hunger Action Month provides a great opportunity for us to expand our continuing hunger relief activities and to really make a difference in the fight against hunger in our communities."
Hunger relief is one of Supervalu's designated areas of focus for its charitable giving and volunteer activities, along with health and nutrition and environmental stewardship. In 2007, the Minneapolis-based retailer/distributor collectively distributed more than 27 million pounds of food to food banks across the nation. This year, however, the need for hunger relief assistance is particularly strong.
During the month of September, Supervalu and its family of stores -- Acme, Albertsons, bigg's, Cub Foods, Farm Fresh, Hornbacher's, Jewel-Osco, Lucky, Shaw's, Shop 'n Save and Shopper's Food & Pharmacy -- are participating in a variety of activities in their respective markets.
