Supervalu Expands Sterilox Sanitizer System for Fresh Produce Companywide

After employing a fresh produce food safety and quality enhancement application for the past five years in four of its key regional banner supermarket chains, Supervalu is expanding the use of the Sterilox Food Safety System companywide to provide an additional layer of protection for fresh produce.

The initiative to expand the use of the Sterilox Food Safety System -- a natural, food-safe sanitizer used to rinse and mist fresh produce, particularly leafy greens -- furthers the Minneapolis-based grocer’s goal to enhance product freshness while simultaneously maintaining the highest level of product cleanliness. Originally implemented throughout the Albertsons, Jewel-Osco, Shaw’s and Acme Markets banners in 2005, the technology will roll out to all of Supervalu’s retail banners over the next several months.

“Our decision to be the first to integrate the Sterilox Food Safety System into several banners in 2005 was based on our commitment to food safety and to offering superior quality for our customers,” said Jim Smits, Supervalu’s group VP of fresh foods merchandising. The move now extends the same safety, quality and sustainability benefits to all customers who shop Supervalu multibanner grocery stores across the country, Smits added.

Using only salt, water and electricity to keep produce fresh and clean, the Sterilox Food Safety System is approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for food contact and by the Organic Materials Review Institute (OMRI) for organics.

With approximately 2,500 retail grocery locations and nearly 900 in-store pharmacies, Supervalu’s nationwide family of corporate stores includes Acme, Albertsons, bigg’s, Cub Foods, Farm Fresh, Hornbacher’s, Jewel-Osco, Lucky, Shaw’s/Star Market, Shop ‘n Save and Shoppers Food & Pharmacy.
