Supervalu Chain bigg's to Launch Biometric Payment Technology
CINCINNATI, Ohio -- Supervalu-owned bigg's, which operates 11 big-box grocery stores in the Cincinnati and Clarksville areas, plans to pilot biometric payment systems in two of its stores.
The systems, provided by San Francisco, Calif.-based Pay By Touch, allow consumers to pay for their groceries with a finger scan linked to their checking or Discover Network Card accounts, eliminating the need to open a wallet or checkbook in the store.
The vendor said bigg's is the first retailer in Ohio to offer the Pay By Touch service. The two stores are the initial phase of a planned full deployment of the biometric payment technology at bigg's.
"This cutting edge technology is yet another way we can provide our customers quick, convenient service," said Denise Fenik, director of advertising for bigg's, who added that the chain "strives to quickly implement any technology or service that enhances the shopping experience for our customers."
Shoppers can use Pay By Touch after a one-time sign-up at a special kiosk located in bigg's stores or on the Pay By Touch Web site. Once enrolled, shoppers can use their finger to purchase products at participating bigg's stores and at any Pay By Touch enabled retailer in the country. To pay for goods, shoppers simply place their finger on a scanner at the cash register. The system then displays the individual's electronic wallet, which contains the payment options available to them. Current options at bigg's include eCheck (a direct debit from an existing checking account) and Discover Network Cards. Additional options, such as other credit cards, may be added at a later date.
