SuperTarget Now Texting Customers

MINNEAPOLIS -- In a bid to connect with its customers through technology, Target Corp. here is now offering to send cell phone text messages to SuperTarget shoppers who register on the retailer's Web site, according to published reports. The service started two weeks ago.

The messages promote SuperTarget grocery specials, coupons, and meal ideas. Target said that it has no plans to send out more than three text messages in a week.

"Mobile messaging is a quick, convenient way to communicate with our guests and help them manage their time," Target spokeswoman Paula Thornton-Greear told the St. Paul Pioneer Press. "We want to be where our guests want and need us to be."

Shoppers can sign up to get such messages by entering "Join 7" and their ZIP codes on their cell phones. They can also register online at www.target.com by providing their cell phone numbers, ZIP codes, and the names of their mobile carriers. Target doesn't charge for the program, but cell phone users are subject to their carrier's standard text-messaging rates.

Although a few U.S. telecommunications companies and other businesses such as shopping malls have used mobile messaging, Target is one of the first retailers to employ them.

Out of Target's 1,400 stores, 158 are SuperTargets.
