Superquinn Forges Buying Pact with Independent Wholesale Group

DUBLIN, Ireland - Dublin food retailer Superquinn has teamed up with Ireland's biggest independent wholesale group to form a 2 billion euro ($2.18 billion) buying alliance, Ireland's Business World reports.

Superquinn has set up a buying operation called Aontas Grocery and Food Services in conjunction with Stonehouse, which operates 55 depots around the country and employs 1,400. Superquinn has 19 shops.

Under the deal, Superquinn and Stonehouse will both carry out all their buying through Aontas.

The deal will give Superquinn -- number three in the supermarket rankings here -- buying power to compete on price with Dunnes Stores and Tesco.

Superquinn chief Feargal Quinn told the Sunday Independent that he hoped it would bring his chain's prices down to the level of the two others.
