Supermarket Rules! Offers Guidance and Reminders for Retailers

2/6/2015

Newly published Supermarket Rules! (Brigantine Media 2015) is packed with “52 ways to achieve supermarket success.” Author and supermarket retail specialist Harold Lloyd organizes this powerful little read into merchandising, operations and management strategies, but the book is appropriate for anyone working in grocery retail. In fact, it would make a great handbook for new employee orientation or an inspiring reminder for anyone engaged in grocery retail.

Merchandising tips might seem obvious, but it’s clear that it’s easy to let critical practices fall by the wayside. Stick with a fresh image in fresh meat and seafood cases by avoiding plastic vines and grapes. Another, don’t ignore what customers see in their final steps to the door; this last impression creates a lasting impression.

Operations strategies include ensuring your store is a friendly place by employing the eight-foot rule of greeting both customers and employees. Also, the backroom is an important part of the store. Associates will carry the clean, positive and professional atmosphere of the backroom with them when they hit the aisles.

Management tips aren’t just for managers: Non-managers, even part-timers, should be included in department manager meetings for the fresh perspective they bring. Participation in these meetings might also encourage their pursuit of management positions. Still more: When employees are involved in hiring decisions, they’re vesting in the success of the new hire.

Lloyd will be signing copies of Supermarket Rules! at The NGA Show booth 614, hosted by fixed-cost reduction firm SIB, on Monday, Feb. 9 from 12-1:30 p.m., and Tueday, Feb. 10 from 10:30-12 p.m.
