Superior Super Warehouse Plans Expansion in Calif.'s Inland Empire

SANTA FE SPRINGS, Calif. -- Superior Super Warehouse, a discount grocer based here, has plans to open five new stores in San Bernardino and Riverside counties over the next 10 months.

According to published reports, the territory in Superior Super Warehouse's sights counties are in California's rapidly growing Inland Empire region. Superior currently has 22 locations, mainly in Los Angeles County, a market it believes it has saturated.

The company opened a store in the Inland Empire city of Ontario in late 2004. Among the new stores slated to open are one in Fontana on Nov. 17, and one in Rialto on Dec. 8. Both measure about 60,000 square feet. Also on the agenda are a store in Chino, which is scheduled to open in June; and one in Moreno Valley in August.

The company's s.v.p. of operations, Phil Lawrence, told the Inland Valley Daily Bulletin in Ontario that Superior plans to open 10 additional stores in the next two years, with the majority in the inland counties. Superior's stores usually employ from 175 to 200 workers.

Superior adheres to a limited-assortment value format, but with some variations from the norm: All of its stores have a bakery where products are made from scratch, as well as full-service meat and seafood departments and a tortilla factory.
