Super Stop & Shop to Open in Expanding Boston Shopping Center

QUINCY, Mass. -- A 76,000-square-foot Super Stop & Shop is slated to open tomorrow at the South Bay shopping center in Dorchester section of Boston, as part of a $40 million expansion of the property by private real estate company Edens & Avant.

Stop & Shop said it moved to the new store from a smaller space of about 55,000 square feet at the same center, "to provide a broader spectrum of products and services to customers."

Stop & Shop spokesman Robert Keane told Progressive Grocer that the South Bay location is a prototype employing 65,000 to 75,000 square feet of space rather than the usual 55,000 square feet or so for the concept.

The company first started building Super Stop & Shops in 1982, and introduced the larger prototypes in 2002. Of the 126 Stop & Shop stores in Massachusetts, the "vast majority" have already been expanded to first-generation Super Stop & Shops, noted Keane, and the same holds true across the grocer's six-state trade area. The Boston area already boasts a "handful" of bigger Super Stop & Shop prototypes, including stores in Walpole and Brookline.

"We're very excited about our new South Bay store," said Stop & Shop e.v.p. of sales and operations Bill Cummings in a statement. "This new store will offer shoppers the very latest in merchandising and customer services, and we look forward to serving the local community and continuing to build upon our reputation as a good corporate citizen in the area." South Bay attracts many shoppers from the nearby South Boston, Roxbury, and North Dorchester communities, as well as being adjacent to the Southeast Expressway.

The grand opening of the Super Shop & Stop is the culmination of a two-year collaboration involving the grocer, the city of Boston, local neighborhood organizations, and Edens & Avant, with the aim of offering more retail options in an aesthetically pleasing shopping center.

In addition to offering Dunkin' Donuts coffee and a Citizens Bank branch, the new Super Stop & Shop will be fully accessible to people with disabilities and provide free WiFi service in the seating area at the front of the store

When the South Bay expansion is completed next year, the center will measure 540,000 square feet. The renovation will include new retailers Circuit City and Bed, Bath & Beyond in the previous Stop & Shop space and Famous Footwear coming in next door to the new Stop & Shop. Among the other tenants will be Applebee's, Olive Garden, a gas station, and Bank of America.

Ahold-owned Stop & Shop employs more than 58,000 associates and operates 365 stores throughout Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New Hampshire, New York and New Jersey.
