Super Seed
First it was quinoa; now it’s kañiwa. The latest superfood to land on U.S. store shelves from the heights of the South America Andes, courtesy of New York-based American Roland Food Corp., sweet, nutty, naturally gluten-free kañiwa (pronounced “ka-nyi-wa”), like its cousin quinoa, is a member of the goosefoot family. Offering a bounty of nutritional benefits -- higher protein, fiber and antioxidant density than quinoa, along with significant levels of calcium, zinc and iron – each kañiwa plant seed is just one-third the size of a quinoa seed. Not only does Kañiwa boast 16 percent protein, a higher content than any other grain, but also in common with quinoa, it’s complete protein as well, meaning that it contains all nine essential amino acids in the correct proportions. The SRP for a 12-ounce box is $5.75. For more information, visit www.rolandfood.com.
