Stop & Shop/Giant-Landover Upgrade Payment Processing Solution

QUINCY, Mass. -- Ahold's Stop & Shop and Giant-Landover banners have chosen VeriFone Holding, Inc.'s MX870 multimedia customer-facing payment system with signature capture for use in their stores.

The banners, which have a total of 11,000 checkout lanes, are in the process of rolling out hundreds of the MX870 systems by year's end, with a plan to install the equipment in all new and remodeled stores, as well as replace older legacy EFT units over time.

"This feature-rich, next generation payment solution provides Stop & Shop with a full range of payment capabilities for today, while protecting our investment by providing a modular, future-proof platform," said Gina Ventre, v.p. of operations & technology support for Stop & Shop and Giant-Landover.

The VeriFone MX870 got the nod from the chains because of its color display, nonscratch touch panel, and ability to capture electronic signatures for payment at all stores, the chains said. An additional feature was its modularity, which offers the ability to add more capabilities as needed, including RF (radio frequency) readers. The MX870 merges full-motion video, digital sound, color display, and secure payments capabilities into one system.

Together, Stop & Shop and Giant-Landover currently operate more than 580 stores in a number of Northeast states and the District of Columbia.

In other Stop & Shop news, the Greater Boston Food Bank has received a $100,000 donation through the grocer's "Food for Friends" program. As part of Stop & Shop's yearly fall "Food for Friends" campaign, all of its stores sell paper turkeys at checkout for $1 each. The turkeys, which can be personalized by each customer, are displayed throughout the stores. All of the funds raised through the program go to local hunger-relief agencies.
