Stop & Shop Rolls Out 17th 'Food for Friends' Anti-hunger Campaign

QUINCY, Mass. -- The Stop & Shop Supermarket Co. here has launched its 17th annual Food for Friends program with the goal of raising over $1 million for more than 300 local hunger relief organizations throughout its Northeast market area. The program will run through Nov. 30.

As part of the campaign, all Stop & Shop locations are selling personalized paper turkeys at checkout for $1 each and displaying them throughout the stores. All of the funds raised will be contributed to local hunger relief organizations.

"Stop & Shop customers have always come to aid those in need," noted Stop & Shop e.v.p. of operations Bill Holmes. "More than 20 million Americans can't afford enough food to meet their basic needs. More shocking is that 13 million of these are children. This is unacceptable, and as one of the largest grocers in the Northeast, it's our responsibility to do something to feed those who need our help."

To keep building relationships with both regional food banks and local food pantries, each Stop & Shop store "adopts" a local food pantry for the Food for Friends program, donating 60 percent of the funds raised at that store, including a $500 company match, to that organization.

The remaining $400,000 raised through the program is donated to regional food banks in Stop & Shop's operating area.

Through Food for Friends and other programs run throughout each year, the retailer donates over $12 million annually in product, cash, and services to help fight hunger.

Stop & Shop employs more than 58,000 associates and operates 385 stores in Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New Hampshire, New York, and New Jersey.
