Stop & Shop Launches 18th Annual Campaign Against Hunger

QUINCY, Mass. -- The Stop & Shop Supermarket Company on Friday launched its annual Food for Friends campaign seeking to raise $1 million for 300 local hunger relief organizations throughout the Northeast.

As part of Stop & Shop's Food for Friends campaign, each Stop & Shop store will sell paper turkeys at checkout for $1 (with an orange background), $3 (brown background), and $5 (yellow background). The turkeys can be personalized by each customer and will be displayed throughout the store. One hundred percent of the funds raised by Stop & Shop will be donated to local and regional hunger relief organizations.

"This is a critical year for fund-raising,” said Jose Alvarez, president and CEO for Stop & Shop. “With the rising costs of fuel and oil, many families have to decide whether their money will go towards food or heat, because they can't afford both.”

Food for Friends will support both regional and local food pantries, and the company will provide a match to funds raised at store level.

Stop & Shop is owned by Netherlands-based Ahold.
