Stop & Shop Kicks off 16th Annual Food for Friends Program Against Hunger

QUINCY, Mass. -- The Stop & Shop Supermarket Co., LLC, based here, has launched its 16th annual Food for Friends program to raise more than $1 million for over 300 local hunger relief organizations in the Northeast.

The program will run through Nov. 26, Stop & Shop spokesman Robert Keane told Progressive Grocer.

As part of the campaign, all Stop & Shop locations are selling paper turkeys at checkout for $1 each. The turkeys, which can be personalized by customers, are being displayed throughout the store. All of the funds raised by the campaign will go to local hunger relief organizations.

"In the United States 5 million people live at or below the poverty level, and nearly a third of them are children," noted Stop & Shop e.v.p. of operations William Cummings in a statement. "Providing meals to those who need help is a cause that directly impacts each community in which we operate and gives each store the opportunity to form a lasting partnership with a local food pantry and make a difference."

The Ahold-owned New England grocer has raised millions of dollars each year fighting hunger, childhood diseases such as pediatric cancer and juvenile diabetes, and supporting its surrounding communities. An exact figure on how much money the Food for Friends program has raised over the years was not available.

Stop & Shop employs more than 58,000 associates and operates 365 stores in Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New Hampshire, New York and New Jersey.
