Stop & Shop Has Next-gen Handheld Device

QUINCY, Mass. -- Stop & Shop customers at 90 stores in New England are the first to use the Modiv Shopper, a next-generation portable shopping assistant powered by Motorola's MC17 mobile computer, Modiv Media said this week at the National Retail Federation 97th Annual Convention & Expo in New York. The handheld device, known to Stop & Shop customers as "easySHOP," gives users the option of "scan-and-bag" service and offers targeted promotions and product information.

The latest version of the solution rolled out beginning October 2007, Stop & Shop spokesman Rob Keane told Progressive Grocer.

"easySHOP will allow us to better serve our customers, empowering them with more control over their shopping trip while making efficient and smart buying decisions through relevant product promotions and information," noted Christine Dorman, s.v.p., operational and strategic initiatives & support services for Stop & Shop, in a statement.

According to Modiv Media president and c.e.o. Robert Wesley, "With our Modiv Shopper solution, retailers can increase sales and customer loyalty through self-service convenience and relevant marketing solutions, while brand marketers can bring real-time, measurable, and coordinated media targeting to the in-store experience."

"The Modiv Shopper deployment at Stop & Shop addresses customers increasing demand for improved customer service in the grocery segment," said Mark Self, Motorola v.p. of retail solutions. The device, he added, would "improve the shopping experience and enable customers to make better-informed purchase decisions, and retailers to reach the customer with relevant marketing at the point of decision."

Modiv Shopper provides relevant consumer-driven media and retail operational efficiencies via a time-saving scan-and-bag handheld for shoppers. The Motorola MC17 handheld shopping device features a large color display designed to stand up to the rigors of everyday use, including accidental drops and spills.

Stop & Shop employs over 59,000 associates and operates 389 stores in Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Maine, New Hampshire, New York and New Jersey.

Other retail customers of Modiv Media include Giant Eagle and Ukrop's.
