Stop & Shop Gets Award for Backing Associates in Military

QUINCY, Mass. -- The Stop & Shop Supermarket Co. here has received the Above and Beyond Award from the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR) in recognition of its continued support of company associates who serve in the military. Members of the Massachusetts Committee for ESGR presented the award to Stop &
Shop president and c.e.o. Jose Alvarez.

"What our members of the Guard and Reserve do is so important; we want to do whatever we can to show them support," noted Alvarez as he accepted the award.

The ESGR award goes employers who go "above and beyond" what Federal law mandates to support the careers of employees who serve in the National Guard or Reserve. Stop & Shop was honored for providing for military leaves of absence and ensuring job opportunities and benefits comparable to those of civilian employees.

Capt. J. Nady Pierre, a Stop & Shop store manager at Stop & Shop and a member of the 26 Infantry BCT (Brigade Combat Team), Massachusetts Army National Guard, nominated the retailer for the award. While Pierre was stationed in Kosovo for over a year, Stop & Shop associates sent him care packages on a monthly basis and kept in regular contact with him and his family during his tour of duty, offering encouragement and support.

Following the presentation, Alvarez signed a signed a "Statement of Support" pledging that Stop & Shop would continue to support those who simultaneously work for the company and serve in the Guard and Reserve. The pledge is in part a visible commitment that the jobs and career opportunities of active Guard and Reserve associates won't be limited or reduced because their service to the country.

Stop & Shop employs over 59,000 associates and operates 389 stores in Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Maine, New Hampshire, New York, and New Jersey.
